Before displacement
Janat Bibi was thirteen and living with her family near Ferozepur when Partition violence forced them to flee toward Pakistan.
Separation and recovery
During an attack on the family’s caravan, her mother disappeared and was never found. Janat Bibi and her sister were among the women taken. Her sister returned within months; Janat Bibi was recovered two years later after time in camps in Delhi and Jalandhar, where officials attempted to trace separated women to their families.
Return and memory
A letter identifying her location eventually reached her husband and father. She returned to a family whose life had changed during her absence. The account notes that she did not wish to revisit her village—a reminder that return across a border does not necessarily mean an emotional return home.
